Story's about the Drillers:

12/15/11
2012 projected roster is up. This team is chalk full of ML prospects. The rotation has five pitchers who could see time in Denver soon. The player at 3B is a stud and may make the Rockies roster in the spring. The outfield has three solid prospects as well. Even the bench is loaded.

Scouting report on Wilin Rosario:
One Rockies scout told coaches at the time (he was signed in 2006) that if Rosario had grown up in the U.S. using an aluminum bat, he might have been the No. 1 overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft. mlb.com

Rob Scahill
: Shows plus fastball, but secondary stuff has a ways to go.

Casey Weathers: Stuff is plus, but control is minus-minus.

Ben Paulsen: 2009 third-rounder hit a wall in Double-A this season

Tim Wheeler: Tweaked his swing this year and saw his power take off

BA's Rockies ranked prospects in the Texas League:

6. Wilin Rosario, c (ndfa 2006)
12. Tim Wheeler, of (1a rd 2009)

After hitting just .249 with 12 homers at Class A Advanced in 2010, Wheeler showed why he was a former first-round pick when he became an offensive juggernaut this season. The 23-year-old batted .287 with a system-leading 33 homers, 105 runs and 300 total bases, while also tallying 86 RBIs and 21 stolen bases. His hottest streak came in May, as he hit .389 with eight homers 24 RBIs and a 1.169 OPS to earn Texas League Player of the Month honors. He also racked up three Player of the Week awards and was named both a midseason and postseason All-Star.

"Just having an approach and staying with it, instead of trying to make both mechanical changes and mental changes week to week," Wheeler said of his outlook. "I had a lot more faith in myself an my abilities, and that was the biggest difference."

"The adjustments he made from the one year to the next -- and basically the big adjustments were his posture and his hitting position -- obviously it generated a lot more power for him," Espy added. "From start to finish, he was a clutch hitter, a guy that drove the ball and used the whole ballpark." minorleaguebaseball.com

Tim Wheeler
, 23, made a quantum leap this past season, going from .249-12-63 at high Single-A Modesto to .287-33-86 at Double-A Tulsa. He has learned to pull the ball with power, but the tradeout has been increased strikeouts - 142 in 138 games.

"Wheeler right now doesn't know his swing," O'Dowd said. "He profiles better than anybody we have (in the minors) at a corner position because of the power. He did something we've never had anybody do in Tulsa, but we're not going to rush him." Denver Post

The 2011 team projection is up.

Most of this team looks solid except for the outfield, which is the weakest in the system.

The infield is solid, probably a bit boring and over loaded on the bench. Holcomb needs to get well and reopen the Rockies eyes or he'll be pushed aside very quickly. Field should continue to plod along on his way to a long career as utility player in the Major Leagues. The extras can fill in at outfield positions as well. Stud catcher, Wilin Rosario, won't be on the team long, if at all, as he may start the season either on the DL or at AAA.

The pitching staff will carry this team with two major league prospects in the rotation, Hollingworth and Nicasio. The bullpen has a couple also, Weathers and Williamson.

The Colorado Rockies' Rex Brothers was the 34th overall selection in the 2009 draft, and has been used as a reliever ever since turning pro, finishing this season in the Double-A Texas League. In my preview earlier in the week, I wrote that Brothers "might not profile as a closer candidate going forward." I based that after seeing his stuff in an abbreviated outing in Class A earlier this season, as well as another report I got after his promotion to Double-A Tulsa.

However, Brothers showed some nasty stuff Thursday night in his first outing of the AFL. Although there's some effort in his delivery (one reason he profiled better as a reliever), he put up a lot of 94s and 95s on the gun, with batters not necessarily getting a good look at it. That velocity was a little better than what I saw earlier in the year, and he can get ground balls with his heater, although I'd still like to see a little better fastball command. Brothers also showed a potential wipeout slider in the 86-87 range when he stays on top of it. The pitch has late, hard tilt and is a definite strikeout offering that a late-inning guy will need in the big leagues. It could just use a little more consistency. He is one to track for those looking to stash away potential future closer candidates. espn.com, Jason Grey blog

Four Colorado Rockies prospects from the Double-A Tulsa Drillers are among Baseball America's top 20 for the Texas League:

No. 4 Wilin Rosario, C, 21, 5-foot-11, 195: Catcher is one of the deepest positions in the Rockies' system with Rosario and Jordan Pacheco at the upper levels and Will Swanner and Jose Gonzalez lower down the chain. Rosario was breaking out in 2010 before tearing an ACL. He will get a late start to the 2011 season, but the injury isn't expect to affect him long term. From BA's scouting report: "Rosario fits the physical prototype of a catcher, and his bat looks nearly big league-ready. He can turn around any fastball and showed a better feel for offspeed stuff this season, learning what good breaking balls look like and what to do with them."

No. 10 Christian Friedrich, LHP, 23, 6-foot-4, 218: The Rockies' expectations for their 2008 first-round pick haven't dampened significantly despite a slightly down season that was interrupted twice by injuries. From BA's scouting report: "Friedrich has big league stuff, but he's still learning to pitch and must prove he can stay healthy. He was incorporating minor mechanical changes to improve his command before he got hurt."

No. 15 Rex Brothers, LHP, 22, 6-foot-0, 205: Also among the top prospects in the California League where he started the season, Brothers is on the fast track after being taken with the 34th overall pick in the 2009 draft. He's a good bet to join the Rockies at some point in 2011. From BA's scouting report: "Brothers is a stocky, aggressive pitcher who loves to go after hitters with his power arsenal. His fastball peaks at 97 mph, though he pitches more often around 95, and it shows good movement. His hard slider is also tough for hitters to square up."

No. 17 Charlie Blackmon, OF, 24, 6-foot-3, 180: The Rockies' second-round pick in 2008 will play in the Arizona Fall League and could find a role with the Rockies at some point in 2011. Blackmon is a good all-around hitter, who has some power and speed and doesn't strike out a lot. From BA's scouting report: "Blackmon has a knack for putting the bat on the ball, with a strong frame that should allow him to hit 20 homers per year in the big leagues. He's still learning the subtleties of hitting, which sometimes slows him down at the plate." insidetherockies.com

2010 projections are up.

This team will be the best of the Rockies farm system. It is strong throughout with deep pitching, solid hitting, speed on the bases and in the field, and very good defense.

Chris Nelson
starts the season here in order to get some playing time but he'll move up soon enough. The injury bug has plagued Chris for the last few years. He needs a healthy year in order to keep his spot in the system because there are some decent prospects behind him.

The players most likely to be promoted quickly are Nelson, Christian Friedrich and Edgmer Escalona.

"This young man has always had the ability to swing the bat. He's gone through stretches where he's carried teams that he's been on for a week-to-10-day period, but then he'll fall off. But what we asked him to do, especially last year, is be consistent and to bring his game every day. He's been locked in from the time he came into spring training." Tulsa World.com

Early standout:
It's nice to see outfielder, Cole Garner, get off to a decent start (.348, 4 RBI, 2 triples and only 2 SO in 23 AB's). Many think he has all the goods to be a very good LF in Coors. If he continues on, then he just might have the opportunity to show that they are right.

Since it appears as though Hector Gomez is still on a throwing program, we are going to move him down to Modesto and promote Daniel Mayora up to Tulsa.

3/9/09
By most reports, Esmil Rodgers will be in the rotation instead of the bullpen. We think that will happen only if Jhoulys Chacin skips a level and is placed in Colorado Springs instead of Tulsa.

12/15/08
Our team projections for the Tulsa Drillers is up. There is a few extra players on the list in case of unexpected developments.

David Patton
would have been the closer but he was lost in the rule V draft last Friday. Hector Gomez gets the nod at SS in place of Chris Nelson, who is being groomed for the eventual 2B job for the Rockies in 2010.

In the rotation we have the system stud ace, Jhoulys Chacin, and the promising, Aneury Rodriguez making the climb from Modesto. And then we have two holdovers from last season, Keith Weiser and Chaz Roe, plus the long time prospect Sam Deduno, who was injured last year.

Many of you may question why Nelson is not in AAA. I believe he should get his time at the new position here in Tulsa instead of the Springs. The competition is fine in AA and there is no need to rush things. A full season at 2B will only help his future development. Besides, plenty of players can and do make the jump from AA to MLB should that be in the cards.

The Drillers new stadium is under way soon.
