2006 grade:
Zach Day - F Much like Kim, Congress and everything else we get from Washington, what at first seems like a pretty good deal can quickly turn sour. Add Day to that category. In three starts with the Rockies at the beginning of the season he was abysmal. So abysmal that no other team would touch him and we let him go for nada. Day's intended role was to compete with Sunny and Josh Fogg for the back end of the rotation, but like Sunny he didn't really make much of that competition.

The Washington Nationals claimed pitcher Zach Day off waivers, ending the right-hander's brief tenure with the Rockies.

Hurdle speaking after another poor, excuse filled effort by Zach Day:
"We can't continue to have that kind of effort, to have that in the starting rotation," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "He knows that. He's well aware of that. He needs to pitch better to stay at the Major League level..

Zach Day has had a horrible spring and will not make the 25-man roster. We hate to say we told you so but that's too bad. He will be given more time to make the team but it isn't going to happen. His stuff is so ordinary that its plain scary to think what O'Dowd saw in him in the first place. Hopefully, he can find some sucker GM to take him off the Rockies hands.

Other than just trying to stay away from line drives, Day hopes to make this a better year with a more detailed conditioning program. Ken Walter, a personal trainer from Cincinnati (where Day spends his offseasons), studied the baseball program at Athletes Performance Institute in Tempe, Ariz., came up with an offseason program for Day and will stay in contact throughout the season.

"I've looked at videotape and I've become a big advocate of watching other successful pitchers -- Bob McClure got me stated with that," Day said. "I did that when I was healthy at the end of last year, and I've carried that over to my offseason workouts. Everything is feeling fine."

"The amount of physical work he's done is tremendous," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "He looks great. We really feel he's going to bounce back and be very good this year. He's going to get his innings and give us some wins this year. He's healthy and in a great frame of mind."

He underwent X-rays and a physical Tuesday in Denver and said his thumb and wrist are fine. In order to gain weight, Day began working with a nutritionist nearly two months ago. He said he has added 12 pounds to 218 and wants to reach 220. Getting ready for the season is Day's sole focus now that contract matters are out of the way.

Zach Day arrived here in the altitude by way of the Preston Wilson trade to the Washington Nationals. He is a starting pitcher that Dan O'Dowd acquired with the future trading of Shawn Chacon weighing heavily on his mind. Once O'Dowd secured the rights to Day, then he showered the media and the Rockie fans with BS about how Zach would fit the profile of a Coors Field pitcher better than Chacon ever would have. With this in mind, we have to evaluate a below average starting pitcher such as Day with Kid Gloves.

Nahhh... we won't do that.

The basic fact is that Day will never be more than a 5th starter on this team or any other big league team for that matter. We will get a better read on him in the spring but this Rox Head can pretty much guarantee you that it will be an uphill battle for him to find a spot in the rotation. Day's fastball is very average at best, with his best pitch being a only slightly better sinker. If he can get past his arm problems
that have severely hampered his velocity, then perhaps he can contribute some before falling into oblivion that the big leagues are so famous for.

That being said, the Rox do need him to get healthy for the sake of the depth of the rotation. It's always prudent to have extra starters around for a team that plays here in Denver and Day could be a piece to that puzzle.

On pitching at altitude:
"It's different, but it's nothing you can't do," Day says. "It's like pitching in heat. You feel kind of drained. I think it's more about getting your heart rate down."
