Catcher Yorvit Torrealba, disabled twice last season because of shoulder problems, will be in Denver on Wednesday to have his right shoulder evaluated. The Rockies are counting on Torrealba to share the catching chores with rookie Chris Iannetta.
Torrealba originally was scheduled to be in Denver last week, but he canceled his trip because of the death of his grandfather.
Torrealba is playing winter ball in his native Venezuela, but his duties are limited to serving as the designated hitter.

Starting catcher Yorvit Torrealba's season is ending the way it began, with Torrealba on the bench nursing a right shoulder strain. Torrealba injured the shoulder in Friday's game, slipping on the plate when he made his throw to second after the warmup pitches between innings.
"We're going to shut him down for the rest of the season," said manager Clint Hurdle. "We don't have available time to get him healthy and play."

Hurdle recalled the first time he saw Torrealba and remembered liking what he saw.
"I've liked him since he was 18 years old and I saw him on [the Giants'] high-rookie ball team," Hurdle said.
"The name struck me as kind of different, and then we watched him play a three- or four-game series against our Portland club. I had seen him as far back as then, and turned a report in on him that I felt he was a Major League prospect."
"We had been looking for a guy with both sides of the ball -- a guy who had not only defense but also offense -- and he was the best package we've come across in the last four or five years I've been here," Hurdle said.

"He's going to continue to have every opportunity to have the bulk of the playing time so we can assess him," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said.

Catcher Yorvit Torrealba (strained throwing shoulder) is working daily at the club's training center in Tucson, Ariz., with Minor League manager and longtime catching instructor P.J. Carey, on rebuilding his throwing mechanics. Dugger said there isn't a timetable for getting him with a Minor League club on an official rehab assignment, but the Rockies want his fundamentals strong before sending him. Torrealba rested on Wednesday, after throwing on Monday and Tuesday.

Yorvit Torrealba, initially projected as the starting catcher this season until going on the DL with a right shoulder sprain, will fly to Tucson after Sunday's game to begin a rehab assignment, with several days at extended Spring Training. He will work with Rookie League manager P.J. Carey on what Hurdle calls a "plethora of drills" and may participate in some games to build his confidence before beginning a stretch with Triple-A Colorado Springs. He has not seen game action since Spring Training.

"I'm trying to be more patient at the plate -- it's been my biggest issue," said Torrealba, who has a .250 batting average and a .315 on-base percentage in 262 career games. "I don't strike out that much and I put the ball in play a lot, but sometimes the patience is what gets me in trouble. I start swinging at everything."

For 3 1/2 years in San Francisco Yorvit Torrealba sat behind Benito Santiago, A.J. Pierzynski and then Mike Matheny, who the Giants signed last year despite Torrealba's all-around superiority. Torrealba eventually got annoyed enough to request a trade, but struggled mightily in a brief trial in Seattle. The Rockies snagged him for a PTBNL in December, and he'll likely get his first fair shot in the best of possible circumstances, entering Denver's offensive nirvana in his breakout-potential age-27 season.
