Tom Martin

Full Name: Thomas Edgar Martin
Born: 05/21/1970
Birthplace: Charleston, SC
Height: 6'1"   Weight: 205
Bats: Left     Throws: Left
High School: Bay High School (Panama City,FL)   College: N/A
Drafted:  Selected by Baltimore Orioles in 6th round (139th overall) of 1988 amateur entry draft (June Regular Phase)

Tom Martin has made the Rockies 25 man roster coming out of spring training. For some reason, Clint Hurdle likes to leave Martin in there against right-handed hitters, however, once he figures out that Martin is just a lefty specialist, then he'll start pitching with better results.

I'm not sure how long Martin will be on the team. Randy Williams has better stuff down in Colorado Springs but for now Martin will gain some big-league service time and hopefully not blow any games in the meantime.

Martin, 36, began 2005 with the Braves, was released after four appearances, spent 20 games with the Astros' Triple-A affiliate, then went home after no big-league team called. But Martin believes his comeback could have been bigger and better. "I'm still not happy with my season, to be honest with you," Martin said. "My inherited runners are too high. I walked too many guys (22, to 44 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings), and the first two months of this season, I didn't help this team at all.

"It's not a total disappointment, but I know I can do a lot better than I've done."

Nonetheless, manager Clint Hurdle said bringing back Martin -- who has told the coaches he'd like to return -- next season will be discussed, starting with organizational meetings on Monday and Tuesday.

Left-handed pitcher Tom Martin has not earned a victory in his past 100 appearances, dating to Sept. 23, 2003, the longest victory drought among active pitchers, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Martin inherited that distinction when Cleveland Indians right-hander Bob Wickman earned a victory Sunday, ending his streak of 105 appearances without a win . .

Atlanta released him last April 15, after giving up five runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings over five games. He pitched in 20 games with Houston's Triple-A club (Round Rock), asked for his release when the Astros didn't have a big-league spot for him, and never found a Major League job. He signed a Minor League contract with the Rockies.
