Ryan Shealy is a victim of circumstances... he is stuck behind Todd Helton, a future Hall of Famer who is still relatively young, so unless he is traded then Shealy will never have a regular job with a Colorado address. Forget the idea that Shealy could be moved to the outfield because he is too big and slow to make the switch even though he reported to spring training a few pounds lighter than previous years. So, if the acceptable thinking is that Helton will never be traded, then the only way Ryan gets a big league roster spot is going to be through a trade himself.

Shealy is a top notch prospect and will be a everyday first-baseman in the Majors. He has a nice glove around first and presents a huge target for the infielders to throw to. He has a powerful bat which also hits for average. He is, in essence, the perfect Coors Field player.

2006 grade:
Ryan Shealy - C- Nine AB's, two hits, both doubles. Really the sample size is too small to evaluate him by his Rockies plate appearances, but he also gets measured by the retrun he got in trade. Jeremy Affeldt and Denny Bautista. So far the results arent spectacular for this season, but this is another grade I might have to revisit in 2007.

The Rockies sent power-hitting prospect Ryan Shealy and Triple-A right-handed reliever Scott Dohmann to the Royals to nab a pair of pitchers, left-hander Jeremy Affeldt and right-hander Denny Bautista, before Monday's non-waiver trading deadline.

Shealy will be asked to provide a lift to an offense that is 3-for-36 with runners in scoring position during the past four games. At Colorado Springs, he hit .284 with 15 home runs and 55 RBIs. When he was with the Rockies last year, he hit .330 with two home runs and 16 RBIs in 36 games.

"He'll have an opportunity to spell [Todd] Helton and will be a big bat off the bench," Hurdle said

"We've had more conversations internally about him than almost anyone else," Rockies baseball operations director Bill Geivett said of the 6-foot-5, 26-year-old Triple-A first baseman. "He has complete minor-league credentials, and we like to believe that he's a major-league player."

Power-hitting first base prospect Ryan Shealy, at Triple-A Colorado Springs rehabbing an elbow injury, is batting .250 with a home run (in his first at-bat last Tuesday), a triple and five RBIs in six games. The Rockies mapped out an 11-day plan for Shealy.

"He has DHed, he's played first base, [he] continues with his throwing program," head trainer Keith Dugger said. "It's not really pain, but he occasionally has a little discomfort after playing in a game, but nothing that has affected him the next day."

"I think I gave it away. ... I don't really want to mess with that anymore," he said.

5. Ryan Shealy - 1B
The curse of being a Rockies first base prospect never hit anyone as hard as it's hit Shealy. Garrett Atkins moved to third. Brad Hawpe staked a claim in right field. Shealy's stuck and so is his bat down in Colorado Springs. The team is looking for an ideal trade partner, but has become a little hesitant to deal with Todd Helton's emerging intestinal trouble. If another team is able to fill a need in a swap for Shealy (second base, catcher) look for him to move quickly. If not, don't count on anything until we're close to the trade deadline at the end of July. Shealy's bat has been major league ready for some time, somebody must want him.

After slimming down to play the outfield, Shealy is back up to a more bulky 240. He didn't even keep his outfielder's glove around as a reminder of the experiment.

5. Ryan Shealy, Rockies, Age: 26
Acquired:
11th round, 2002, U. of Florida

The Rockies were hoping that Shealy would be in their outfield mix this season, but a spring elbow injury snuffed out those plans. He's still sidelined and will likely return to first base once he's healthy. Shealy is a career .324 AVG/.417 OBP/.594 SLG hitter in the minors. Those are highly impressive numbers, but keep in mind the generally hitter-friendly Rockies system. Shealy will crush fastballs in the majors, but it's not certain how he'll handle advanced breaking stuff. Also, note the age.

Now the conclusion the Rockies wanted to avoid is growing as a possible solution. General manager Dan O'Dowd acknowledged on Wednesday that a trade could be explored once Shealy proves healthy and returns to action. The club will not revisit Shealy in the outfield, so unless Helton suffers a serious injury, it looks as if Shealy's future is elsewhere.

2/28/06.. analysis.. FOXSports.com
It took the .330 average in the majors for people to really take notice of him, but Shealy has been one of the top hitters in the minors ever since Colorado made him an 11th-round pick out of the University of Florida in 2002. Instead of trading him because of Todd Helton's presence, the Rockies decided to have him drop some weight and work out in the outfield. He could initially open the season as the platoon partner for left-handed-hitting Brad Hawpe, and if he proves capable, an everyday role can't be ruled out, though it may be tough for him because of his history of knee troubles. Shealy could be a regular first baseman on another team. His average may drop to the .280 range, but he'd hit 25 homers and draw walks. The possibility is still there that the Rockies will trade him, with both the Red Sox and the Indians having displayed interest in the past.

Shealy is trying to keep the presence of Todd Helton at first base from truncating his at-bats. Manager Clint Hurdle said Shealy would play primarily in right field at Coors if left-handed hitting Brad Hawpe is not in the lineup.

Concerning Shealy's move to right-field:
"Davey Collins (a Rockies coach) says that at this stage, Ryan (Shealy) is ahead of Holliday and Hawpe," Rockies special assistant Marcel Lachemann said. "Now, Holliday and Hawpe have worked hard and come a long ways, but at this point, Ryan has the edge. . . . He would have no problem playing out there in a big-league game."

Rockies prospect Ryan Shealy was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2005 CONCEBE Regional Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Sunday, by the selection committee. The United States team player prospect batted .500 (10-for-20) and was also named the leading hitter in the event.
