Ryan Spilborghs

Full Name:  Ryan A. Spilborghs
Position:  OF
Born:  September 5, 1979 in Santa Barbara, California
Height:  6-1   Weight:  190
Bats:  Right   Throws:  Right
High School:  -
College:  University of California-Santa Barbara
Drafted:  Selected by Colorado Rockies in 7th round (201st overall) of 2002 amateur entry draft (June Regular Phase)

Ryan Spilborghs got himself noticed in 2006. After jumping up and down between AAA and the Majors during the season, Spilly settled in as the 4th outfielder for the Rockies by the end of the season. The Rockies didn't really know what they had in Ryan because of a heel problem in 2005 that needed surgery. He answered those questions by continually improving at the plate and in the field.

He has a little power which may improve as he gets older and earns more at bats. His defense is very acceptable with a nice arm to boot. Look for Spilborghs to secure a bench role in spring training and maybe even a starters spot in center.

I watched Ryan Spilborghs play some last year with the Sky Sox and came away unimpressed. Over the winter the front office decided to drop him from the 40 man roster. This spring, however, Ryan has stepped up his game by reaching base in 16 of the 20 games he has played. He plays a steady outfield with average field coverage. He also has an average arm. His righthanded swing is smooth and level with some power.

Since being called up on May 28th, his bat has come alive and was one of the reasons that Eli Marrero was expendable.

"Spilly's really come up here and done a good enough job, and he's taken most of Eli's at-bats," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said to the media. "This allows us to balance out our bench better."

The Rockies recalled outfielder Ryan Spilborghs from Triple-A Colorado Springs while designating outfielder Jorge Piedra for assignment

"He's become a dangerous hitter," Rockies player development director Marc Gustafson said. "He came to Spring Training and was one of the best performers that we had. [He] became a leader in Tulsa, and after he was promoted to Colorado Springs, he hung with that. I think he found a comfortable routine and approach."

Gustafson also said Spilborghs fits best in left field, but an intelligence that helps him learn hitters quickly and his ability to get good jumps on balls give him enough range to fill in at the other spots.

Rockies traveling hitting instructor Jimmy Johnson said, "He can hit a good fastball, stay off a breaking ball in the dirt and hit a bad breaking ball."

A new type of surgery on the patella tendon this winter has the Rockies front office watching his progress in Camp Tucson. The technique is one that the Rockies' doctors are not familiar with, so Rockies head trainer Keith Dugger said watching Spilborghs is an educational endeavor. Dugger said the technique apparently follows the same principle as the microfracture surgery, in which tiny fractures are created to spur the body to repair itself. MLB.com

"He's just continuing the things he said he would do probably a year and a half, two years ago, and those were to look to hit the other way and use the whole field," assistant general manager Bill Geivett said. "I think when he does that, he's a guy that can play at the Major League level."

2004 report:
Athletic OF who can play on the corners and fill in adequately in CF. Gd body. Long limbed and wiry strong. Phys. mature. Line drive stroke with raw batspd and some strength. Near avg raw power plays 30. Gets long and has holes. Can be beaten with hard stuff underneath his hands. GD oppo approach for A ball hitter. Doesn't square the ball with any consis. to take advantage of his raw tools. Hasn't made adjustments. Has reached his offensive ceiling. Fringy runner who runs hard on routine balls. Solid avg arm in LF or CF is a bit short in RF but solid accuracy makes up for it. Good routes in and speed is playable on defense. Can't see him hitting past AA level. Value is at the org. level, a cup of coffee @ AAA.

The Rockies also nontendered outfielder Ryan Spilborghs. It's possible they will re- sign Spilborghs.
