Ramirez was not prevented from pitching in winterball. There was some talk that the Rockies might ask him to shut it down based on his heavy workload last season.

Ramirez had two outstanding months after being called up from Triple-A in April, but he teetered from mid-June to early July. Ramirez said that he resisted worrying about being sent back to the Minors. Instead, he just went back to throwing his sinking fastball after leaning too hard on his breaking pitches.

"I don't know why I got away from my fastball," he said, laughing. "You want to try more curveballs. But you have to go with the best you have."

The biggest question when Ramirez was acquired was his control. The Rockies sent him to the Arizona Fall League last fall to develop the mindset and strike zone performance of an effective reliever. The numbers were mediocre -- 17 strikeouts to nine walks -- but Ramirez learned what he needed.

Rami started the season in AAA, then got an emergency call-up to replace Mike DeJean. If he continues to pitch how he's started this season, that might be the last whiff of the minors he'll ever have. Since Eduardo Sierra was lost on waivers to the White Sox a couple of weeks ago, Rami represents the last return the Rockies got for Shawn Chacon last summer. So far, so good. The key to Ramirez's surge is an effective change-up that he's just developed over the off-season. This pitch keeps batters timing off and he mixes it well with his mid-nineties fastball. His ceiling is probably as a set-up man, but there should be closer opportunities available for him in the future. Despite my instant infatuation with the man, effective roster management would probably see him traded at some point when his salary really starts to rise.

"He's done as well as anybody could envision," said Hurdle. "He's been a very pleasant surprise. I don't know what happened from the time he left Spring Training to when we saw him again. There is more finish to his fastball, there is a little more velocity, there is a better tilt to his slider, more movement to his changeup ... everything's more compact, there's more confidence. We're ecstatic."

Ramirez is expected to keep the seat warm until Scott Dohmann returns next week. Still, Ramirez wasn't complaining about his call-up.

"I was totally surprised when they told me," said Ramirez. "I am happy."

The Rockies called up righty Ramon Ramirez -- obtained from the New York Yankees along with fellow righty Eduardo Sierra for righty Shawn Chacon last season -- to replace DeJean. Ramirez, who posted a 2.25 ERA in four Spring Training appearances, said he thought being sent to the Rockies was the break he needed.

"When I heard about it, I heard that this was a pretty good organization for you to come up to the big leagues," Ramirez said in Spanish, with teammate Jose Mesa interpreting. "But at the same time, I had to work hard.

"When I left the Dominican Republic, I came ready, not just for Spring Training but for the season."

Hurdle said Ramirez would be used earlier in games, rather than later, and he is hoping to use him quickly. Ramirez pitched in Colorado Springs' season opener but not since. He was held back because of injuries in the starting rotation.
