The Rockies promoted right-handed reliever Nate Field and catcher JD Closser from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Field, 30, left the Sky Sox leading the Pacific Coast League with 25 saves. Had he not suffered a torn fingernail just after midseason, he might have been called up then. Field succeeded by showing confidence in his slider, after not believing in it in the past. But the Rockies bullpen was strong enough that Field didn't get a chance until now. Depending on other offseason moves, Field could be a prime candidate to begin next season as a part of the Rockies bullpen.
"I felt like I was pitching pretty well and I probably deserved to be in the big leagues, but not any more than anybody else that was here," Field said. "Everybody here has been lights-out all year. It's hard to be upset about that kind of situation.
"There's always a possibility that you come up here, have a good showing and show them you can be a very valuable hand out of the bullpen. I don't think everything relies on this last month, but I do think it can be a stepping stone to next year." Field will get opportunities, since rookie right-hander Ramon Ramirez experienced cramping in his upper right leg during his last appearance. The Rockies don't want to push Ramirez and cause further injury.
