Obviously there isn't much to report about concerning Mike DeJean's 2006 season. A arm injury pretty much ended the season before it began so any projections for 2007 must be tempered as we have no idea how the arm will recover.

DeJean
has a mutual option in his contract for $1.5 million in 2007. It'll be interesting how the situation is handled, however, the Rockies, as with most teams, always need bullpen arms so look for management to give Mike all the time he needs in Camp Tucson.

2006 season

Mike DeJean is the perfect setup man for the Rockies and he can fill in as a closer if need be. He throws hard and throws strikes which is what a bullpen pitcher must do, especially one who makes a living at Coors. His salary is low enough that if a situation comes up in July or August, then he could also be used in a trade.

He went 2-3 with a 3.19 ERA in 38 appearances with the Rockies in 2005. He began the year with the New York Mets and went 3-1 but with a 6.31 ERA in 28 appearances. He was much better here -- 35 strikeouts and 12 walks in 36 2/3 innings, compared to 17 strikeouts and 18 walks in 25 2/3 innings in NYC.

DeJean should slot well into the 7th or 8th inning setup role in 2006. He also is a nice veteran to have in the pen.

"I just want to be functional in the clubhouse, functional in the bullpen and functional when I get out on the mound. That would be the best three ways that I could help the Rockies organization," Mike told the media.

Rocky Mountain News: "DeJean has a mutual option in his contract for $1.5 million in 2007 and said he plans to exercise his part of the option. DeJean and club officials have not talked, but the Rockies might try to work out a deal where DeJean returns but initially signs a minor league contract so they can have extra room to protect prospects on their winter roster."

Mike DeJean threw on flat ground for the second day in a row and fifth day in the last six. Afterward, he said: "I've got a lot of arm strength back. I could get hitters out right now, but I couldn't do it two days in a row, and you can't afford that in the bullpen." So the rehab process will continue, one that DeJean expects to have him throwing simulated games off the mound within two weeks. He hasn't thrown off a mound in two weeks.

Right-handed pitcher Mike DeJean, on the disabled list because of right shoulder tendonitis, played catch for the second day in a row. He will take today off and is scheduled to play catch Friday. "We tried the fast track earlier and it didn't work," said trainer Keith Dugger. DeJean has been on the disabled list since April 12 .

DeJean faced live hitters again on Saturday, pitching a short simulated game as a means of auditioning for a rehab assignment in the Minors, but the results of his 30-pitch session made it clear that he's going to have to remain patient. He will likely back off from facing live hitters for the time being, returning to side work as the medical staff continues to evaluate his situation.

Rockies head trainer Keith Dugger said the results of an MRI on the throwing shoulder of right-handed reliever Mike DeJean were encouraging -- a slight strain and inflammation. DeJean, placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, will rest for two or three days before returning to strengthening exercises. He'll most likely go on a rehab assignment.

Rockies teammates identified DeJean as a leader, a fact not lost on general manager Dan O'Dowd.

"I don't think any one person is more important than another person, but the continuity of having Mike, the type of person he is, was even more important than his ability," O'Dowd said. "More than anything he else, he is a very good human being and a role model."

Right-handed reliever Mike DeJean is in the final stages of completing negotiations on a one-year contract with a $1.15 million base salary plus a mutual 2007 option. The contract is expected to have performance bonuses based on appearances. DeJean, 35, went 2-3 with a 3.19 ERA in 38 appearances after signing with the Rockies on June 20. He began the season with the Mets, and he went 5-4 with a 4.48 ERA in 66 total appearances.
