Luis Gonzalez ended the season in AAA and was not called up in Sept because of arbitration concerns. It goes without saying that he had a disappointing season. Injuries to his wrists and the unexpected success of Jamey Carroll left Gonzo without a place to play. However, just because he may have appeared to have taken a step back doesn't mean that the Rockie front office has forgotten about him.

Anybody who has watched Luis play can see that he has major league talent. He will still have a future with the Rockies because of his potential. He is still young (27) and other teams inquire about his availability which shows that the scouts out there haven't discarded him either.

Look for Gonzo to make some noise in spring training.

2006 season

Luis Gonzalez might go down as one of Dan O'Dowd's best pickups, especially when you consider that he nabbed Gonzalez from the Cleveland Indians for only rule five fee of $50,000. Gonzalez has been the super sub for his first two years and will start off the 2006 season as the starting second-baseman.

His defensive range is average and he has a steady, if unspectacular glove. He is a streaky hitter who tends to disappear for a week or two but then will pounce onto the scene for 3 or 4 games like an All-star scoring runs, moving runners along and even driving in some late inning, game winning scores.

Look for Gonzo to fight tooth and nail at keeping the starting job at second for the next few springs at least... and maybe for much longer.

2006 grade:
Luis A Gonzalez - D While not as truly abysmal as others on this list, Luis was the only hitter expected to get major at bats and was pencilled in as the starter at second before the season began. Luis was anticipated to be an upgrade over Aaron Miles but proved merely his equal. Eventually with a surge from Jamey Carroll he was permanently benched and never regained his past form as a super utility player. With Carroll and Kaz Matsui playing so well at second this season, and with Troy Tulowitzki possibly taking over for Clint Barmes at shortstop, there's a chance that the team will look to move Gonzalez in the offseason. It's questionable whether he'll return with the Rockies in 2007.

Had Luis Gonzalez been recalled this week with the others from the Sky Sox he most likely would have received enough service time to be eligible for arbitration.

Rockies second baseman Luis Gonzalez left Friday's game after the first inning with inflammation in both wrists. Gonzalez has a condition that creates inflammation in joints and requires anti-inflammatory drugs when it flares.

Gonzalez suffered inflammation in the right wrist during the season-opening homestand and missed several games.

"He has a gift for putting the barrel of the bat on the ball and he has a passion for doing it," hitting coach Duane Espy said. "You look at him starting his third year in the big leagues and you can sense the maturity he's found over the last two years. He's a lot calmer and he's playing a lot more in the strike zone."

"He(Gonzo) has one of the sweetest right- handed swings in baseball. I think he's only going to get better as an everyday player," says Todd Helton.

Gonzalez has some pop in his bat and has hit .292 in both his big-league seasons. He isn't flashy, but he has the baseball instincts. He always seems to be in position to make the play. He has a plus arm and makes a strong pivot on the double play.

Luis Gonzalez has a higher OPS in two years with Colorado (.774) than in his seven years in the minors (.756). Sure, he punched his bush league clocks in the pitcher's parks of the Cleveland chain before being taken in the 2003 Rule 5 draft by the Rockies. Although he is entering his peak years, Gonzalez can't be expected to produce more than he has, and that isn't much--he ranked 12th among NL second baseman in PMLVr last year.

Second-base Rankings:
19. Luis Gonzalez, Rockies: Gonzalez saw time at several positions in 2005, including 83 games at second base. But indications are he could be the Rockies' full-time second baseman in 2006. Gonzalez platooned with Aaron Miles in 2005, but he also played shortstop, third, first and in the outfield, committing only four errors.
