Kaz Matsui, a free agent, has said repeatedly that he would like to remain a Rockie. Thus far negotiations have reflected as much as Colorado makes progress toward re-signing a player whose speed made the offense much more dynamic in September.
"I have had multiple conversations with his agent. They have been productive," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said Tuesday. "There hasn't been anything negative as it relates to his desire to want to be here."

The Colorado Rockies announced Tuesday that infielder, Kaz Matsui, has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
"We think our environment, the atmosphere and the young group of players here might be able to help Matsui redefine his skills, re-establish his confidence," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "I don't think the media scrutiny will be as intense in Denver as it was in New York. We'll see if we can lighten his load a little bit."

The Rockies have instructed Sky Sox manager Tom Runnells to play Matsui primarily at shortstop to get him accustomed to making all types of plays, but the Rockies could use him at short or second if they promote him.
Runnells told a reporter in Colorado Springs that he asks Matsui about his health daily, and so far, so good. Matsui also has a vigorous daily exercise routine. "I think he's feeling much more comfortable offensively -- with every at-bat, he seems to get a little better," Runnells said. "He obviously has a world of talent. Defensively, he's getting more comfortable each day, too, with the positioning and the throws he has to make."

Kazuo Matsui is progressing in his rehab from a back strain that he suffered right after the Rockies acquired him from the Mets.
His activity has increased, and he can now take part in all the pregame activity -- fielding ground balls and batting practice -- except baserunning, Dugger said.

Infielder Kaz Matsui, whom the Rockies recently traded for and assigned to Triple-A Colorado Springs to work on his swing, was diagnosed with a protruding disc in his lower back after an MRI, head athletic trainer Keith Dugger said.
Current treatment includes rest and stabilization exercises, which could reduce the swelling. If that approach proves unsuccessful, Dugger said, an anti-inflammatory shot may be necessary. Matsui was put on the Minor League disabled list retroactive to June 20, which means he can't play again until June 27.

Matsui is in the final year of a $20.1 million contract that he signed after becoming a star in Japan. But since arriving, Matsui has shuffled from shortstop to second base, battled injuries and, this season, slumped to .200 in 38 games after beginning the year on the disabled list with a sprained right knee.
But general manager Dan O'Dowd and others with the Rockies believe the change of scenery will help return Matsui to the gregarious, athletic player he was in Japan, rather than the burdened player he was in the Big Apple, where he was expected to be the Mets' counter to the Yankees' Japanese star, Hideki Matsui. After a few days in Denver working with manager Clint Hurdle and staff, Matsui will report to Colorado Springs and play shortstop and second base.
