"I'll look for opportunities for JD to get involved, because when he catches we win games," said Hurdle, referring to the Rockies 12-9 record when Closser starts. "He's made some improvements, his throwing has improved. Offensively he needs to work on some things to become more consistent, but this is going to be an opportunity to play that wouldn't have been there had Torry been healthy. We'll see if he can make the most of it."

His confidence seems higher this year," Jennings said. "He grew up a lot. Last year he had a tough season and fought through it. He started this year in Triple-A, which is probably not where he wanted to be, but he went about his business like a man, like a professional, and it has definitely showed since he came back."

The Rockies recalled Closser for Friday night's game against the Giants, and placed catcher Danny Ardoin on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left knee.

"He's improved," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "What you saw in Spring Training is what they're seeing now. What we saw was a guy whose throwing was markedly improved in Spring Training. He's worked hard. This is a window, a short window, maybe.

Catcher JD Closser, trying to regain prospect status after struggling while spending all of 2005 with the Rockies, earned Triple-A Pacific Coast League Batter of the Week honors on Monday. Closser batted .588 (10 for 17) with two home runs, three doubles and six RBIs for Colorado Springs. He raised his batting average 57 points to .345

This winter, Closser changed his diet to lose weight and regain movement. He spent hours working on his throwing. Also after a year when even his throws to third after strikeouts with no one on base -- a tradition that allows infielders to catch and throw -- went wild and became a subject of concern, he paid equal attention to sessions with club mental skills coach/sports psychologist Ronn Svetich.

"I think it was good to sit back and really evaluate what happened," said Closser, who said the new physical look was a matter of training and monitoring how much he ate. "I think that's what taking the whole month of October off did, just reflecting and spending time with my family and realizing that it's just a game and people have bad years. It's not like it's the first time that's happened to somebody."

After a strong debut in 2004, J.D. Closser was made the starting catcher last spring. Entering the season with a career line of .281/.383/.459 in 2435 minor league at bats, Closser hit just .219/.314/.376 in 237 AB and played terrible defense (13 runs below average in 80 games). He's still likely the best offensive option of the three, but it remains to be seen whether he can hit enough to be an asset despite his leaden glove, and the '05 flop makes it doubtful the Rockies will give him much more time.
