2006

David Cortes is the kind of reliever every team needs. You could throw him out there almost every day and he'll give a good effort. Cortes has a nice moving fastball that bores in on a right-handers and a solid slider.

Look for David to make the team this spring and be apart of the Rockies for a few years to come.

The Rockies have outrighted right-handed pitcher David Cortes from the 40-man roster. Cortes made the Opening Day squad and went 3-1 with a 4.30 ERA, but lost his spot when the Rockies reduced the bullpen by one after the All-Star break, and never returned from Colorado Springs because of the emergence of Manny Corpas. Cortes is a free agent.

2006 grades:
David Cortes - C+ Cortes wasn't too bad out of the pen in the first half and had some shining moments as the Rockies raced to an early surge. When things started to fall apart, however, the team decided to go with Corpas instead. Wise choice. In nearly an identical amount of innings and appearances Corpas has almost halved Cortes' ERA (2.25 to 4.30) and has nearly twice as many K's (26 to 14). Having the out pitch is what really separates these two, Corpas can get the K when he needs it, Cortes can't.

With Colorado looking for better relief work, Cortes said he can't use inactivity as an excuse if he happens to throw poorly.

"My problem has been the location," Cortes said. "In my case, and I can't speak for everybody, when I don't pitch much, my ball starts staying up and consistently my arm angle starts dropping down. I'm trying to throw bullpens every other day, sometimes three days in a row to try to keep my arm not tired but in pitching shape and not too rested. Rest hurts me more than being tired."

Cortes' 2005 performance (2-1, 4.50 ERA) earned consideration for this year's bullpen, but numerous veteran additions and the possibility of some starter types falling into bullpen roles has left his spot on the roster tenuous.

"David Cortes did a real good job for us last year, and we're certainly not going to throw that away," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "He had a real good winter and could be in the World Baseball Classic, and he's on our radar screen."
